Since June is the traditional month for weddings it’s a great time to discuss how to scrapbook your wedding photographs. I can hear you groan as you read this! For some reason, even the most experienced scrapbooker can be too frightened at the prospect of starting on a wedding album. Yet, our own weddings or those of a son, daughter or other loved one are some of the most important moments in our lives. These photos deserve our time and talent.

Here are a few suggestions to help make the task less intimidating:

  • Consider a smaller size than what you normally scrap. e.g., I am a 12x12 scrapper but I am creating both my son’s album and my own wedding album in 8.5x11.
  • Professional photos scare you? Start with the candid shots instead.
  • Using one basic sketch for all the pages is a very elegant look and certainly simplifies the process.
  • Limit the number of photos you use, e.g. you may have 10 different photos of the bridal party but that does not mean that you have to scrap every single one of them! Place the remainder of the photos in an archival safe photo album.
  • Consider a simpler/graphic style. This is one of those times when the focus needs to be on these one of a kind photographs.
  • Still feeling intimidated? Start with your honeymoon or bridal shower shots to “practice”.
  • Remember, there is no such thing as a “perfect” layout.

Hopefully I have convinced you that you need to create your wedding album, so how do you get started?

  • Sort your photographs in chronological/story order. In fact, this step may have already been done if they are in a photo album. If so, congratulations, you are a step ahead of the process.
  • Choose the photographs you want to include in your album. Remember, you don’t have to scrapbook every one of them. Start with a core set that tells your wedding day story from start to finish. Don’t be afraid to mix it up with both professional and candid shots. Store these in an archival safe manner until you are ready to start scrapping. Once this set is scrapped, you will be a wedding layout professional so adding more pages will be a breeze if you decide you want to scrap even more photos.
  • Select a color scheme. This task is the one that seems the most daunting. Obviously, the photos are your first clue as they reflect the wedding colors. Perhaps a combination of the wedding party attire colors and the flowers, plus either white or black. Decorators have been using the 60-30-10 rule for years and it works for a scrapbook page too (i.e. 60% dominant color, 30% second color, 10% accent color). Destination wedding? Consider the colors of the surroundings. A simple black and white combination is also very striking.
  • Decide on theme and style. The theme seems obvious as it’s a wedding! However, take into consideration the venue and type of wedding. For an outdoor wedding you might want to include more organic type accents such as flowers. For a formal church ceremony, think classic and elegant. For beach wedding you might want to reflect a tropical motif. For a casual event, a more whimsical style would be fun.
  • Gather materials. You don’t necessarily have to buy everything at once but do keep in mind that scrapbook materials can be discontinued. The hunt and gather stage should not go on forever for this reason. You need to actually be scrapping those pages so if you need more paper or embellishments you can be assured they are still available when you need them.
  • Scrap those wedding pages. They do not have to be scrapped in chronological order – start with anyphoto that speaks to you.

Think of the legacy you will be creating for your loved ones. Picture them in your mind….slowly turning the pages, gazing at the photos of a younger version of you, reading your thoughts as you embarked on a new chapter in life. I can see it. Can you?

Maw Maw By AngieCMT

I love the way Angie captured the essence of the photo’s era with the color palate of the layout. The circle around the photo draws the eye in to the focal point of the layout, and the stamping is a beautiful detail.

Bryant’s Room By Dawn Dawn

Dawn Dawn’s door sign for her son’s bedroom is simply rockin’ cool! He will definitely be one proud boy to have this sign to warn others of the risk of entering his room.

So Goofy…You Make Me Happy By Aline

Aline’s color choices, doodling, whimsical design elements, and attention to detail make this a super fabulous layout!
