Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!

Take to heart this Cajun expression and let the good times roll when planning your next celebration! Make it a stylish event with unique party accessories inspired and created from some of your favorite scrapbooking staples.

Themed patterned paper collections make it easy to design well-coordinated invitations, party décor, thank you cards and favors. The Junkitz Extreme Boy collection inspired two of our designers to create two very unique party sets. One line, two ways! Susan designed thank you cards to match her invitations, and embellished water bottles for the guests as a cool party favor. What a wonderful idea for a hot day! From the moment you open Cecilie’s pirate party invitation, you know you’re in for some excitement. Singed paper pirate map hints at the treasure hunt party game you will play and placecards welcome everyone to the table. Each guest leaves with a goody bag tied together with coordinating pirate tag. Arrr!

The next time YOU are invited to a celebration, consider creating personal tags, cards, and unique wrapping or packaging for your gift. Pillow box, fry carton and other templates are available for many of the popular cutting machines. Use your favorite patterned paper, add a coordinating tag and voila! Popular with preschool and elementary school parents are little business-card sized “calling cards”, printed in fun designs and personalized with the child’s name. I made my own by using stamps from the KI Memories It’s A Boy Icons set. These are so easy to attach to a present in place of a card!

The soft blues of My Mind’s Eye Baby Boy Oui Oui papers inspired two baby-themed cards. The shower invitation was embellished with a cute little carriage made by taking a quarter slice out of a circle of patterned paper and adding button wheels. The birth announcement used two KI Memories stamp sets, wording from It’s A Boy and stars from the Journaling set. There’s even room for a photo to be slipped beneath the velvet ribbon at the bottom of the card. And if it’s a girl, look towards the My Mind’s Eye Baby Girl Mon Cheri papers and accessories.

Browsing the patterned paper section of the Lifetime Moments store, I was bombarded by more ideas! Here are a few party themes and paper sets to consider for your next celebration:

My Mind's Eye Embossed Chipboard
By: Melissa Thigpen, Design Team Member

My Mind’s Eye has done it again - something new and innovative - and perfectly matched! Their newest product is chipboard shapes and letters that are embossed with designs to match their luscious papers and other embellishments. But how to use these raw chipboard shapes with nothing more than a pressed in design? There are quite a few ways to dress these chipboard shapes up with ink, paint, chalks and markers.

The very simplest way to bring out the design on embossed chipboard is to rub an inkpad lightly over the raw chipboard. This will color the raised parts and leave the embossed design uncolored. The result is a rustic or slightly shabby chic looking piece.

Chalking is another easy way to dress up the embossed chipboard. I traced the embossing on this flower with a Versamark pen thinking that the chalk might stick better to the ink. It didn’t really work out that way but the added highlighting of the embossed design worked nicely in this case.

Painting the chipboard before inking it creates a nice effect as well. It changes the base color of the piece and also makes the piece less absorbent and intensifying the ink colors. There is a trick, however, as the embossing tends to be rather shallow so a too thick coat of paint will fill the embossed pattern in and obscure it completely. I found that thinning the paint a bit with water helped prevent this. I also found that painting both sides of the piece prevented it from curling too much. By the time the chipboard dried, it was nicely flat and ready to ink. Before I inked the piece, I gave it a light sanding to smooth the edges and surface as the moisture of the paint raises the surface a bit.

Again, the inking creates a shabby look. For the following piece, I found that in spite of a light touch, the ink filled in the embossed pattern. I was not willing to give up, though. I sanded some of the inking off the raised part of the chipboard and used a Zig marker to enhance the embossed dragonflies.

Another way I liked to make the design pop was to do a bit of heat embossing. To do this I either inked or painted the base tag and then used a Versamark pen to trace the embossed design. Embossing powder sticks beautifully to the Versamark ink then it just needs to be heated with the heat gun. For the crown tag I also Versamarked the edges of the tag and embossed it as well.

Finish your chipboard in a variety of ways. Add a coat of KI Gloo or Diamond Glaze to add some shine to the final piece. Buttons, ribbon or rhinestones make a nice final touch for your chipboard pieces. Any way you chose to alter Bohemia Embossed Chipboard, the final product will be a beautiful embellishment for your pages or cards.
