A Note From Jackie

Hope. Love. Joy. Happiness. Everyone loves the excitement that important life events brings us. Scrappers perhaps most of all! Saturday afternoon we will share in a very special moment as Jackie Raines (former LM employee, lil jackie on the message board), gets married! Congratulations Jackie! We are so happy for you!

Funky Felts & Fabrics

Whether your purpose for scrapbooking is to showcase memories for future generations or merely as an artistic release, texture is important. Yes, scrapbook pages will be protected and therefore no one can feel the pattern in the Bazzill cardstock or the plushness of the velvet trim, but just like the smell of vanilla might make you think of holiday baking without the actual cooking, texture can still be sensed and this adds to the depth of the page. These tactile accents help bring the richness of the memory to the completed project.

One of the favorite new ways to add texture to a layout is the introduction of felt accents. From American Craft to KI Memories and Queen & Co, felt is the new big thing. This trend shouldn’t surprise anyone just make us wonder what took it so long. After all, anyone who grew up doing crafts knows first hand the ease and adaptability of felt. American Craft recently introduced Felt Thickers and House Collection Felt Shapes. KI Memories is offering felt Alphabets and Blooms to each of their new collections. Queen & Co has gorgeous felt ribbon. The Thickers are adhesive and come in various colors and fonts. The other felt pieces are not self-adhesive. A quick and easy way to attached them is with the Xyron “X”. Most of the shapes are small enough to fit in this little sticker maker and you end up with a stick-able piece of felt. Glue Dots also work though I prefer their Ribbon Strips for use with felt. Fabric glue and double sided tape work well also. Be careful with placement of the adhesived felt as you can easily damage your material trying to remove and re-place the sticker. Other ways to adhere felt elements to a project include:

  • Brads! Always a favorite and their inclusion will add yet more texture and depth to your layout.
  • Sewing! Felt already gives a warm home-style feel to any project. Sewing will only heighten this.
  • Staples! Why not give your felt a funky edgy feeling?
  • Buttons! Another home spun embellishment that can work double duty here.

Felt accents are the perfect balance between the traditional sticker and the scrapbookers’ desire to add some depth and texture to a layout without bulk.

A dressier step up from felt is velvet. Scrapbookers have enjoyed including velvet ribbons in their projects for awhile now. There is such a comforting and traditional feel associated with velvet. Crushed velvet , stitched velvet ribbon, velvet blossom trim, and velvet ric rac from Maya Road quickly and easily add luxurious or vintage feel to a layout. Likewise, Maya Road’s velvet flowers offer more sophistication to a project than felt. As versatile as any flower embellishment, the richly colored velvets give the impression of a more exclusive or formal event. Velvet ribbon and flowers can be adhered in the same manner as felt. Maya Road’s flowers are double sided, but be careful with the ribbon so you don’t strip the plush velvet with the adhesive.

Finally, similar to enjoying the look of textured cardstock is the inclusion of actual fabric in your layout. Fabric papers have become popular recently. This hybrid offers the look and feel of fabric along with the sturdiness of paper. And while some might consider these expensive additions to a page, consider using them as accents instead of your background. KI’s new Love Elsie lines will include two patterned fabric papers that will add fun to any layout! Just like paper, this fabric can be used for cutting letters or die cuts. Or combine strips or blocks of the fabric paper along with other patterned papers. The vibrant and unique patterns offered mean that you can easily use smaller pieces of the paper to help define your layout.

No matter whether you consider felt, velvet or fabric for your next layout or project, you can feel comforted knowing that the addition of these accents will give your project a warm and welcoming feeling. And with the versatile options out there, you can find the perfect one to let your loved ones how much caring and thought went into preserving your memories and creating your works of art.

Iron On Bling
By: Miranda Isenberg, Design Team Member

MAMBI rhinestone iron-ons

Add a little sparkle and shine to your wardrobe, your albums, even your layouts! The newest MAMBI bling to hit the market works on just about every surface and with a few tips anyone can master the art of the iron-on.

The first and most obvious place to use your rhinestone iron-ons is of course, clothing. T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and more. There’s a large variety of words and sayings so you’re bound to find something that’s just right for you. I used this ‘boyfriend wanted’ saying on a plain t-shirt I had just sitting in my closet.

Thinking outside of the box, these iron-ons are perfect for lots of things outside of your bedroom closet. Take for example this We R Memory Keepers album. The linen cover was the perfect base. In just a few minutes my previously plain album now has a touch of fun and personalization!

And if you thought sewing on layouts was crazy… wait till you try IRONING on them! Just an added bit of creativity, and I was able to adhere one of the iron-ons directly to my page.

With a few tips, you too can add fun and sparkle to just about any flat surface!

  • Follow the directions! When I first read them I thought 3-4 minutes with the iron sounded like forever! I thought for sure I’d burn the house down. Through trial and error (and one ruined hat) I discovered it says 3-4 minutes for a reason! If you take the iron off too early or remove the plastic covering before it’s completely cooled not all of the rhinestones will stay put and you’ll end up with a mess.
  • Be sure to work on a flat, hard surface to keep from ironing over a big wrinkle or crease. I also added a towel in between my work surface and the iron.
  • One area where I didn’t quite follow directions was where it says to keep the iron completely still. I was worried I would end up with a big iron shaped burn mark in the middle of my shirt, so I did wiggle the iron around just slightly the entire time.
  • If you’re using your iron-on for a layout, be sure to adhere the photos AFTER the iron-on has cooled. Trust me… your photos will melt if you try to overlap the rhinestones onto them and then heat. *OOPS*
