Tools of the Trade
By: Franny Lesniak, Design Team Member

Whether you are a professional scrapbooker or of the novice variety, there are essentials that make the job easier, quicker, and more fun! These essential tools can be grouped into two categories: basic, rudimentary tools; and tools that are more task-specific. As a starting point, beginner scrappers should have a set of the more basic tools: paper trimmer, a good pair of scissors (or three {wink, wink}), a ruler, a craft knife, and pens and pencils.

While these primary tools get the most basic jobs done, there are certainly tasks which call for more specialized tools. Tools in this task-specific category include… eyelet setters, die cut machines/handles, paper punches, circle and other shape cutters, notch-cutting tools, sanding blocks and edge scrapers, acrylic blocks for stamping with acrylic stamps, paper piercers, embossing and rub-on tools, .etc. Whew! And this is just the tip of the iceberg!

Take it from the Lifetime Moments Design Team, listed below are some of the scrapper’s tool “must haves”!

Margaret Winters

I am forever turning my punches over so I can see what I am punching especially when I'm punching something specific out of patterned paper so I fell in love with Fiskars Squeeze Punches.  They are so easy to use and I love that by being able to see where I'm punching that I am able to save on paper also, and no more accidentally cutting over into the previous punched out design.

I find the Fiskars Tool Taxi so handy! I love that all six of the tools fit inside and it's so portable. I think I use this thing as often as I use my trimmer these days.  I haven't used a craft knife in so long that I've had a lot of fun lately cutting stuff out by hand and no more trying to find my rub-on sticks that seem to always disappear somewhere, it's so much easier to grab for my Tool Taxi.  This has definitely become a 'gotta have' tool for me!

Cecilie Malling

Since I am a hand-cutting kind of woman I was excited to see the Basic Grey Precision Mat– and I am even more excited about using it! The mat is great for several reasons: since it is magnetic the ruler stays in place when it is put down on the mat making for a precise cut, the mat is large enough for a 12x12 LO but small enough to easily fit on a table, the magnetic tabs can be use to hold page elements, patterned papers when they are cut and rub-ons while applying them.

I like the roughened look achieved by using an edge scrapper with distressed patterned papers like Bohemia, Basic Grey, Cosmo Cricket, Crate and so on. The distressed edges lend dimension to the paper and also help to frame the pp against other page elements.

I often reach for my MM sanding block to make a thin “mat” directly on the pictures by lightly sanding the edges of the pictures in small circles it is possible to achieve the look of a very thin frame. As with the edge scraper this is a tool I use often with distressed patterned papers.

This Rub On tool is a perfect replacement of the icicles sticks that comes with rub-ons: it is more comfortable to use than the icicles sticks and it has two different points for different usages. The rounded end is great for small rub-ons like alphas while the flat end is great for larger rub-ons like borders. More over the flat end of the tool can be used to flatten edges of papers when they have been cut.

Making Memories Precision Paper Trimmer – After years of frustration with other kinds of trimmers which refused to cut straight or needed a new blade every two weeks, the release of the Making Memories Precision Paper Trimmer convinced me to take the plunge to a rotary style cutting system.   I am more than pleased that I decided to make the switch.  It cuts straight every time and thus far has remained sharp.  It is also possible to cut the smallest sliver of paper – very handy when matting photos.

Making Memories Slot Punching Tool – I have a weakness for new tools and gadgets so I have to confess that the Making Memories Slot Punching tool was really more of an impulse buy rather than a need.  But it has quickly become one of my “go to” tools.  It has come in very hand to cut notches anywhere on my paper in order to insert and tie ribbon.  It’s also handing for notching out corners or for cutting a crescent shaped slot for tucking a flap.  The beauty of this tool is that it is designed to work with tools you probably already have which is the Instant Setter or it also comes with an attachment so you can use your hammer.

Melissa Thigpen

Basic Grey Notch & Die Tool: This tool intrigued me from the first time I saw it. What a nifty little tool for making multiple cuts of uniform shape and size. The half round and V notch tabs can hold a card or photo down, make a slot for weaving paper or ribbon or create a decorative pattern. In theory, this tool cuts when you apply firm pressure to the handle. In practice I prefer to line it up and give it 2 or 3 taps with a hammer. The technique is quick and easy and gives me the best control.

Crop-a-Dile : My favorite thing about this nifty tool is the ease with which I can punch holes in heavy material like chipboard. In fact, I have punched holes through multiple layers of chipboard or paper when I have been making a small, ringbound album and want the holes lined up just so. This tool makes that easy.

Cutterpede : speaking of chipboard, this is my go-to cutter for cutting strips and pieces of chipboard. A nice added feature of the Cutterpede is the availability of different blades designed for this cutter. LM carries the Score blade, Perforator blade, Deckle blade, Wave blade and Zig-zag blade.

The EK Succes Curvey Cutter has worked its way into my top 5 list of tools. These templates go up to a full 12x12 and are simply amazing. You just place your tool in the correct groove, and then press it down and around for the cut. It works best with the glass mat, but I've worked successfully on a self heal mat as well. While some people can trace and handcut, my hands are not that steady, and making successive curves that are identically smooth is impossible - nor do I have the time or patience. These templates are clear, allowing for precision designs that go beyond simply tracing the template. I've used it to cut perfectly curved scallops, swooshes, in addition to humungo rounded photo corners. I love this tool.

Tonic 12" Guillotine Trimmer - A self-sharpening blade and clean straight/squared cuts...imagine!! A gem of a find after too many years of wonky squares and rectangles using less than useful paper trimmers!

Basic Grey Magnetic Precision Mat Kit - Because I can't grow an additional hand, the Basic Grey Precision Mat is deemed the best tool ever in my book! Hand cutting titles and shapes are done with ease and precision (just like the name states)!

Miranda Isenberg

Fiskars squeeze punches - I LOVE these punches!! Just one little squeeze takes very little strength which means anyone can use this tool. With the specially designed handles punching shapes from patterned paper, cardstock, even thin chipboard is a breeze!

But wait! There is more! There were more than a handful of new tools revealed at the recent CHA, designed specifically with the scrapbooker in mind.

Bo Bunny is coming out with the most adorable files for sanding. Also revealed at the show: Around the block's label writer, Making Memories Tag Curler, Quickutz Silhouette, Doodlebugs new cutting mat and COOOOOOL craft knife (with the cutest flower and gem on the handle end - which you can't tell from the photos). Already on order is the new Fiskars glue gun (very cool). Bare Elements introduced an alterable tool organizer for your desk top, Additionally; We R Memory Keepers came out with the new GREEN Crop-a-Dile in the green case... and the pink case for those that have the pink Crop-a-Dile. Furthermore, Cropper Hopper had two Tim Holtz ink pad carrying cases for storage.

As you can see, the scrapbooker’s tools are equally important as papers, stickers, stamps.

A Glimpse into My Creative Space

By: Sonya Shaw, Design Team Member

Do you ever wonder where others create? What their spaces look like? I do all the time, and I absolutely love to see others spaces! It’s so fun to see the creative and innovative storage solutions people come up with. This week I will share my creative space, and storage solutions. I love my room now that it’s finished! It’s the perfect place to let my mind wander freely, the space I run to after all household chores are complete, and the kids are tucked away ever so gently in bed. It’s a place to escape and relax, it truly is my therapy. However, unlike the rest of my house, my scrap-space is decorated completely different – whereas the rest of my house is more contemporary, my scrap room is a place I love to play, filled with things thats make me happy as I look upon them. That is how it should be, evoking those feelings the second you walk in the room.

The only thing I would love to change about my space is more light – I have a small window, and it’s so dark during the day. The walls are lavender, and all accents are blue and red, it’s hard to tell in the photos since the natural lighting is so horrendous in here. I recently saw this color scheme in a magazine and fell in love! Well that and the walls were already lavender ;)

My husband bought these shelves for me a few weeks ago, I love them! They are perfect! The best part for me is that everything is easily accessible. Cabinets would not be ideal for me, I need to be able to see everything, or I forget I have it. I also go through my room about every 6 months and purge items. My rule – anything that I haven’t used for more than 6 months goes to my daughter. She loves the stuff, and slowly acquiring her own scrap room within her room. It’s cute! I just love that she shares this hobby with me.

I also love flea markets and sales as you can tell from above, old windows and jars ooolala, I can’t walk by them without having to bring them home with me. My hubby loves that part… haha! The window above I have carried around with me, move upon move, trying to figure out what to do with it, and a few weeks ago I finally decided to make a cork board out of it, it’s fabulous! So easy to do, just knock the glass out, cut the corkboard and glue in, or in my case, even easier if you *cough* let your hubby do it for you. Add a few hooks as he did, and it’s the perfect accessory to any space. The curtain I made using felt, fabric and fabric trim. Cheap, inexpensive and very cheery!

For storing my supplies, I have compiled a group of photos as you can see above, or a little eye candy fun! I am always on the look out for new and innovative ways to organize and store my supplies. There are so many fabulous products on the market to help us achieve that organized space we desire! I love baskets and jars, and I have even more tucked in the closet just waiting for the perfect accessory to put in them. *giggles* Since I am a stay at home mother, I work within my budget in decorating my space. That and the less I spend on organizational items – the more I can spend on supplies. *embarrassed* But the fun part of it for me is painting and decorating these old baskets, (the baskets sitting on my shelves were found at a dollar store, marked down to 70 cents each). What a bargain! Scooped them up in a hurry, brought them home, and with a little acrylic paint, and fabric, they are the perfect accessory for my supplies! To store my paper, I recycle the boxes that LM sends our orders in! They work perfectly, but you have to be careful not to cut them too far down. For mine, I paper matched them with tissue paper, and added embellishments to complete the look, using chipboard sheets with tabs to divide my paper sections. I also have some paper storage boxes on the top shelf in the closet – these are papers that I love, but can’t bear to let go yet. I use a 3 drawer organizer that is kept within arms reach to store those commonly used items. It’s also portable if I want to grab a few things to take downstairs with the kids or hubby during the evenings. The top drawer is full of adhesives. The second drawer is pens, tools, etc that I might need, and the 3rd drawer is acrylic blocks and ink pads. Chipboard letters are stored in a garage nut and bolt organizer, found in the tool section at any dept store. It’s so much easier than grabbing a huge basket of letters and digging through to find what you want to use, and since I mix them up on layouts anyways – this works perfect for me! There are some however that I do not put in there, and keep within a basket in their original packaging. Baskets are organized by products – (i.e.: Rub-Ons, Chipboard, Attachments, florals, tags, etc.) Some are organized by manufacturer – depending upon the product I have. Embellishments and items I use often are stored in jars on my desk in front of me, this helps when scrapping to remember to grab them and use them. The other jars are also organized according to product, and the best part is you can see completely through them, so you just grab and use.

A shoe closet organizer is a perfect solution for tight spaces. Atop sits my scanner, and books I grab often whilst sitting at the computer. It also helps to free up desk space, allowing more room to spread out.

Totes underneath my wall shelves, house things such as sewing items, fabric and other fun crafty things! I have one that is dedicated to scraps, as I scrap I throw on the floor, well that and everything else I own, hahaha! Once done I simply throw the scraps into the tote. Since, I am horrible about using my own scraps, it’s perfect for the kids to grab and go through. So I keep throwing them in there for them to play with.

That is pretty much it for my creative space, just a few things for you to see and hopefully enjoy, and I certainly hope you have loved my little tour. I will upload more photos to my gallery if you wish to see them! In the meantime, if you have a space, please, please come share it with all of us at Lifetime Moments!! We would love to see it! Even if it’s a corner of the room, it doesn’t matter, we would still love to see it! I used to scrap in the corner of my bedroom before moving to Arizona, and was always looking for ways to store things that were concealed, and didn’t take up so much space. So if you have a wonderful solution for that, please share! Show us your photos! Show us those creative works, and your creative get away! We look forward to seeing them. *smiles*
